one of the great truths in life is that when a female wants to shop for something "really quick" or it will "just take a minute," they are lying. at least 99% of the time, and 100% of the time in my personal experience. second, about the cashier using your name- i work for a company that uses "secret shoppers" to score stores on their customer service. one of the things we are scored on is whether or not we use the customer's name during the transaction. since this is can be difficult to do without sounding like a complete jackass, we try to make a little small-talk while the transaction is being processed. obviously, we still sound like jackasses to some people. just so you know. finally, player piano is my favorite "big brother" book, and i dig your diary.
